Governorship election: Kano govt issues warning to NNPP, supporters

The Kano State Government has warned the opposition against any form of violence during the Governorship and State Assembly elections.

Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba issued a statement directed at the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.

The official cited credible information on how thugs would be hired from Kano and nearby states to carry out rigging, box snatching and arson.

Garba recalled that in 2019, the opposition managed an organised election rigging network that involved youths, mostly without voter cards.

He said the plan for the 2023 poll is to create chaos and disperse voters at polling units in order to subvert the will of the people.

The commissioner accused the NNPP of playing the victim card, assuring that the Abdullahi Ganduje-government would ensure peace.

The statement urged security agencies to arrest any individual or group bent on fomenting trouble in the state.

The NNPP had accused the ruling APC of planning to suppress the people’s wish through intimidation and other strategies.

The governorship contest in Kano, a key battle state in Nigeria elections, is between the APC and the NNPP led by former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

On February 25, the NNPP presidential candidate won in 38 of the 44 local government areas of the state with 997,279 votes.
