Rivers Governor Fubara defies impeachment moves assures state is safe

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed his position as the state’s governor, despite ongoing impeachment proceedings by the state House of Assembly. Speaking on Saturday at the grand finale of the 2026 NPA Port Harcourt International Polo Tournament, Governor Fubara assured attendees that Rivers State remains safe and secure, notwithstanding the current political unrest.

The governor’s remarks come amidst a deepening political crisis in the state, sparked by his disagreements with lawmakers. However, during the polo tournament, Governor Fubara emphasized that his administration remains committed to its responsibilities, citing the successful organization of the event as evidence of the state’s stability.

“I am still the Governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to deliver on our promises to the people,” Governor Fubara stated. He also commended the tournament organizers for demonstrating the state’s safety and his administration’s effectiveness. The governor noted that the one-week tournament passed without incident, which he believes showcases the state’s security and his government’s capabilities.

The political tensions in Rivers State have been escalating due to the face-off between Governor Fubara and members of the state House of Assembly, who have been pushing for his impeachment. Despite these challenges, Governor Fubara has maintained that his administration is working to ensure the state’s safety and security, which he considers the primary responsibility of his government.

The successful hosting of the international polo tournament has been seen as a significant achievement for the state, given the current political climate. Governor Fubara’s administration has been focusing on maintaining stability and continuity in the state, even as the impeachment proceedings continue. The situation in Rivers State is being closely monitored, with many awaiting the outcome of the ongoing political developments.
