Tinubu Suspends APC E-Registration in Kano State

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the suspension of the All Progressives Congress’ electronic registration exercise in Kano State, according to a member of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa. The directive was disclosed in a video circulated on social media, where Doguwa stated that the decision was taken by the APC national leadership following an order from President Tinubu.

The development comes barely a week after the Kano State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Ahmed Aruwa, announced that the party was set to flag off the e-registration exercise in the state. Aruwa had stated that the party was expecting former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to be in the state for the official launch.

Doguwa suggested that the decision to halt the registration exercise is linked to ongoing political developments involving Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is rumored to be considering a defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC. The lawmaker stated that the President and the national leadership of the APC have decided to pause the registration exercise until Yusuf officially defects, as he will be the first to collect the membership card.

The suspension of the registration exercise has sparked speculation about the possible defection of Governor Yusuf, which has been the subject of rumors and high-level consultations in recent weeks. While the state government and the NNPP leadership have neither confirmed nor denied the defection claims, political analysts believe that the reported halt of the APC registration exercise may be linked to ongoing negotiations aimed at managing internal party dynamics in the state.

The development has significant implications for the political landscape in Kano, a key battleground state ahead of the 2027 general elections. The state’s political direction is expected to have a significant impact on national politics, and the reported defection of Governor Yusuf could potentially shift the balance of power in the region. As the situation continues to unfold, the APC has yet to issue an official statement explaining the suspension of the registration exercise, leaving many to speculate about the next steps in the ongoing political drama.
