Imo State: APP Condemns Billboard Vandalism

The Action Peoples Party in Imo State, Nigeria, has condemned the ongoing destruction of its billboards across the state, alleging that agents of the ruling party are behind the vandalism. The party claims that the destruction is targeted at its leader, Ikenga Ugochinyere, and is part of a deliberate plan to undermine opposition visibility and suppress democratic expression.

According to a statement by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Cajetan Duke, the destruction of billboards in Ideato North and Ideato South federal constituencies is a dangerous regression that seeks to intimidate and harass opponents. The party views this as a threat to the democratic process, particularly with the 2027 general elections approaching.

The Action Peoples Party has called on the perpetrators to cease their actions, which not only cause material damage but also aim to instill fear among supporters and distort the level playing field essential for credible elections. The party has urged all political actors to engage in issue-based competition, driven by superior ideas and policies, rather than intimidation or sabotage.

The party has appealed to security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, to investigate the incidents, identify the culprits, and ensure swift prosecution. The party has also called for adequate protective measures to be put in place for political materials, party installations, and democratic actors to guarantee a hostility-free and harmonious political environment.

The Action Peoples Party has reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful, inclusive, and democratic advancement for Imo State, calling on the media, civil society organizations, community leaders, and citizens to stand against political thuggery and promote tolerance, dialogue, and fair play. The party’s concerns highlight the need for a stable and secure environment for the 2027 elections, where all parties can campaign freely and voters can make informed decisions.

The destruction of opposition party billboards is not an isolated incident in Nigeria, where political tensions often run high. The incident underscores the importance of ensuring a level playing field for all political parties and protecting democratic rights and freedoms. As the 2027 elections approach, the ability of political parties to campaign freely and safely will be crucial in determining the credibility and legitimacy of the electoral process.
