The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) strike has been suspended after the company’s management and labour unions reached an agreement. The industrial action was halted following a meeting at the Kano State Ministry of Power on January 23, 2026, involving KEDCO, the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE).
The agreement addresses several key issues, including the payment of outstanding arrears. KEDCO has committed to paying the 13th-month salary for 2019, estimated at approximately N150 million. Additionally, the company has pledged to pay the 2025 13th-month salary bonus in February 2026, alongside workers’ monthly salaries.
The parties have also agreed to reconvene to discuss other unresolved issues, with the aim of reaching a lasting resolution. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat, leaders of the electricity workers’ unions, and KEDCO’s management will participate in these deliberations. Furthermore, the agreement guarantees that no worker will be victimized or sanctioned for participating in the strike.
A memorandum of understanding was signed by KEDCO’s Managing Director, Dr Abubakar S. Jimeta, representatives of the labour unions, and government officials who served as witnesses. This development brings an end to the industrial action, which had disrupted electricity distribution services in the region.
The agreement is significant, as it demonstrates the commitment of the parties involved to resolving their differences through dialogue. The payment of outstanding arrears and bonuses is expected to improve worker morale and productivity, ultimately benefiting electricity consumers in the region. The next steps will involve the scheduled discussions to address the remaining issues, with the goal of achieving a long-term resolution to the disputes. With the strike suspended, KEDCO is expected to resume normal operations, ensuring a stable electricity supply to its customers.
