Nigeria’s gas production saw a significant increase in 2025, with a rise of nearly 8% or 198 billion Standard Cubic Feet (Scf) to 2.706 trillion standard cubic feet, compared to 2.508 trillion standard cubic feet in 2024. According to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) Gas Production Status Reports for 2025, this growth underscores a steady but measured expansion in upstream gas supply.
The report highlights that associated gas production stood at 1.441 trillion scf in 2024, accounting for approximately 57.4% of total gas output, while non-associated gas contributed 1.068 trillion scf, or 42.6% of production. By 2025, associated gas rose marginally to 1.456 trillion scf, whereas non-associated gas increased more strongly to 1.250 trillion scf. This represents a 1.1% growth in associated gas production and a 17.1% increase in non-associated gas.
The data also shows that gas utilisation moved broadly in line with production, with total gas utilised increasing from 2.313 trillion scf in 2024 to 2.500 trillion scf in 2025, representing an 8.1% growth. The ratio of utilised gas to total production jumped from 92.2% in 2024 to 92.4% in 2025, largely absorbed by domestic consumption, exports, and other uses.
Despite this improvement, gas flaring also increased in absolute terms, with total gas flared rising from 192.9 billion scf in 2024 to 204.0 billion scf in 2025, an increase of 11.1 billion scf or 5.8%. Gas shrinkage, however, fell from 2.464 billion scf in 2024 to 2.121 billion scf in 2025, a reduction of roughly 14%.
The NUPRC notes that nearly 90% of the increase in total gas production between 2024 and 2025 came from non-associated gas. The federal government has set a target of 12 billion cubic feet of gas production by 2030, as part of its ‘Decade of Gas’ programme, which has unlocked over $8 billion in investments in 18 months, with an additional $20 billion expected in the coming years. The programme aims to fully monetise incremental gas and reduce flaring volumes, highlighting the ongoing challenge of efficient gas production and utilisation in Nigeria.
