Jigawa Speaker emerges chairman of Progressive Speakers Conference

The Speaker of Jigawa State’s House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, has been elected Chairman of the Progressive Speakers Conference, an umbrella body for Speakers of state legislatures from Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dangyatin’s election occurred during the conference’s annual congress and leadership vote held in Abuja. The Progressive Speakers Conference is dedicated to enhancing coordination among APC Speakers, advancing the party’s principles, and contributing to national democratic development.

Alongside the chairman, the conference elected new executive officers. The Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly became Deputy Chairman (South), while the Speaker of Nasarawa State House of Assembly assumed the Deputy Chairman (North) role. The Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly was elected Treasurer. Six zonal vice chairmen were also chosen, including Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, Speaker of Ogun State, who will represent the South-West zone, and the Speaker of Plateau State for the North-Central zone.

The new executive team is scheduled to be sworn into office on Monday, February 9, 2026.

The election has drawn commendation from Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi. In a statement, the governor described Dangyatin’s selection as “well deserved,” noting it comes at a strategic period as the APC prepares for the 2027 general elections. Governor Namadi expressed confidence that Dangyatin’s experience would fortify collaboration among party members and help secure electoral victories nationwide.

The leadership change places Dangyatin, a key regional political figure, at the forefront of a forum that mobilises state-level legislative leaders to align with national party strategy, with direct implications for the APC’s cohesion and campaign coordination in the next election cycle.
