APC Moves to Consolidate in Kano After Governor’s Defection

The national leadership of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified efforts to solidify its structure in Kano State following the high-profile defection of Governor Abba Yusuf. National Secretary Surajudeen Basiru visited Governor Yusuf at the Kano Governor’s Lodge on Wednesday, describing the meeting as a strategic move to unify and strengthen the party in the state.

Basiru stated the primary objective was to consolidate the APC’s presence and expand the governor’s support base. “The visit afforded us the opportunity of discussing how to further strengthen and unify our party, the APC, in Kano State and further the support base of the Governor,” he said in a post-meeting statement.

The meeting underscores a significant shift in Kano’s political landscape. Governor Yusuf, who was elected in 2023 under the banner of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), formally decamped to the APC in late January 2026. His defection represents a major gain for the ruling party in a pivotal northwestern state, transferring executive power and likely a substantial political following from the opposition.

Analysts view Basiru’s visit as part of a coordinated national strategy by the APC to integrate newly acquired members and stabilize its governance coalition ahead of future electoral cycles. The discussion likely covered grassroots mobilization, reconciliation of intra-party factions, and harmonization of the state government’s agenda with federal APC policies.

For Governor Yusuf, aligning with the APC provides direct access to federal patronage and resources, which may influence the implementation of state projects. The collaboration also aims to project a unified front in Kano, potentially marginalizing the diminished NNPP and other opposition groups in the state.

The outcome of this consolidation effort will be closely watched. Success in integrating the governor’s structure could bolster the APC’s dominance in the northwest, a critical region for national electoral strength. Conversely, challenges in merging disparate political groups could test the party’s cohesion. The meeting signals a clear next step in operationalizing the defection, moving from symbolic party loyalty to practical governance and organizational strategy in Kano State.
