Nairobi, Kenya — The Kenya Open Golf Limited (KOGL) has announced a 12-man professional team to compete in the 2024 Magical Kenya Open, the European Tour event teeing off at the Karen Country Club on Thursday.
The team was unveiled at a ceremony at the venue on Monday, attended by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya. Mvurya framed the tournament as a significant moment for Kenyan sport, stating the players represent the nation’s 55 million citizens. “This confirms Kenya’s rising status in sports globally,” he said. “We are no longer content with participation but want to compete and win on the global stage.”
The Cabinet Secretary emphasized the expectation for the Kenyan contingent to be competitive contenders, not merely participants. “We wish you all the best and know you will do well,” Mvurya added, underscoring the government’s support for the sport.
KOGL Chair Patrick Obath expressed optimism for improved performance this year, citing greater competitive exposure for the players during the current season. He set a clear target, noting, “I see no reason why three or four Kenyan players should not make the cut this year.”
The Magical Kenya Open features a full field of 144 players from over 30 countries. Kenya enters the largest international contingent with 18 players—12 professionals and six amateurs. South Africa follows with 17 players, including defending champion Jacques Kruyswijk.
The Kenyan professional squad named for the tournament includes: Greg Snow, Samuel Chege, David Wakhu, Njoroge Kibugu, Dismas Indiza, Mutahi Kibugu, Daniel Nduva, Captain Edwin Mudanyi, CJ Wangai, Justus Madoya, Mohit Mediratta, and Mike Kisa.
The four-day tournament runs from February 22 to 25, 2024, at the Karen Country Club in Nairobi. The event serves as a key platform for Kenyan golfers to gain world ranking points and showcase their ability on the international stage, aligning with the nation’s stated ambition to transition from host to consistent winner on the European Tour.
