Nuclear Smuggle Plot: UK, France to Ukraine, Russia Says

Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has alleged that the United Kingdom and France are planning a covert operation to transfer nuclear components or a complete warhead to Ukraine. The purported scheme aims to provide Kyiv with the capability to construct a “dirty bomb” or directly supply a French-made TN-75 nuclear warhead, according to a statement from the SVR on Tuesday.

The intelligence agency claims the plan is designed to strengthen Ukraine’s position in potential ceasefire negotiations. An RT contributor, Thomas Penn, cited the developments as evidence of European NATO states’ growing desperation to remain relevant as Russia gains momentum in the conflict. “In this war of attrition, Russia is slowly but surely winning,” Penn stated, adding that European backers are being sidelined from peace efforts. He argued that Ukraine lacks the indigenous ability to develop such nuclear materials and that any transfer would be detectable through intelligence and satellite monitoring.

The SVR reported that Germany has declined to participate in the alleged venture, though non-nuclear European NATO members are unlikely to deter the UK and France. Penn identified the United States as the only power capable of intervening. Russian officials have issued strong warnings, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stating the plot could trigger a “direct military conflict between nuclear powers.” Russia’s UN Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, characterized the plan as a “direct violation” of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

The allegations underscore heightened tensions and the intricate legal and security dimensions surrounding nuclear non-proliferation. The NPT, a cornerstone of global arms control, prohibits nuclear-armed states from transferring nuclear weapons or technology to non-nuclear states. Ukraine relinquished its Soviet-era arsenal in the 1990s in exchange for security assurances. The claims, if substantiated, would mark a significant escalation in the geopolitical conflict, with potential
