Timaya: Children Out of Wedlock Better, Marriage Fails

Nigerian Afrobeats artist Timaya has generated public discussion after stating that having children outside of marital unions is preferable, claiming that marriage “doesn’t work.” The comment, made in a widely shared video clip, contrasts with his own history as an unmarried father of four.

The 40-year-old singer, known for hits like “Dem Mama,” appeared alongside fellow musician Paul Okoye (Rudeboy) in the viral video, seemingly offering advice to colleague Phyno. Speaking in Nigerian Pidgin, Timaya said, “Just born pikin, pikin go grow. This marriage thing no dey work.” The remarks received visibly varied reactions from individuals present in the video and prompted mixed responses across social media platforms, with many observers disagreeing with his perspective on marital institutions.

Timaya’s personal life aligns with his stated viewpoint. He is a father to four children with three different women: daughters Emmanuella and Gracey with Barbara Fumnaya Nwaokolo, a son named Emmanuel with Tamar, and a daughter, Maya, with Dunnie Onasanya. Despite his role as a parent, he has never married.

In a 2024 interview with Naija FM, Timaya addressed his lifelong unmarried status, attributing it to a personal lack of attraction to the institution of marriage. “I have never been drawn to marriage,” he stated, while noting that his position could potentially evolve in the future.

The incident highlights ongoing cultural conversations about family structures, parenting, and matrimony within Nigerian society. Timaya’s commentary, coupled with his non-marital parenting history, has positioned his remarks within broader debates about traditional values versus modern family dynamics. The viral nature of the clip suggests the topic resonates widely, continuing to elicit public reflection on the roles of marriage and childbirth.
