AG Bondi Moves to Military Base Over Cartel, Epstein Threats

US Attorney General Pam Bondi has relocated to military housing in the Washington, DC area following reported threats, according to The New York Times. This move aligns with a pattern among senior Trump administration officials seeking more secure accommodations.

Bondi’s relocation occurred within the past month. The newspaper, citing individuals familiar with the matter, stated the decision was driven by threats from drug cartels and critics focused on her department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Security concerns intensified after the US-led raid to apprehend Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year; Maduro faces US drug trafficking charges, which he denies.

Bondi joins several other top officials who have moved to military installations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem have also taken up government-owned housing typically reserved for senior military personnel. This trend was first detailed by The Atlantic in late 2024.

It remains unclear whether these civilian officials pay for the housing. Noem was the only one to address the cost, with her spokesperson stating she pays “fair-market rent.” Noem was dismissed last week following controversies, including two fatal shootings during Minneapolis protests and a costly advertising campaign.

Historians and former officials note that while housing civilian leaders at military bases predates the current administration, the scale of its use now appears unprecedented. Past instances of such arrangements are rare in recent US history.

The practice raises questions about resource allocation and transparency. Government-owned military housing is designed for armed forces personnel, and extending it broadly to political appointees without clear payment structures deviates from standard practice. The significance lies in the intersection of heightened security concerns for officials and the utilization of military resources for civilian leadership—a dynamic that may set a new precedent for future administrations.
