Iran Fires Missiles at Jerusalem, Israel Intercepts

Missiles launched from Iran triggered explosions over Jerusalem on Thursday as Israel’s air defence systems intercepted the incoming projectiles, the Israeli military reported, marking a significant escalation in the deepening conflict between the two regional rivals.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated it detected the launches from Iranian territory and immediately activated its defensive networks, including the Iron Dome and Arrow systems. Air raid sirens sounded across central Israel, including in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, prompting residents to seek shelter. Multiple loud explosions were heard in the skies, which journalists and local media attributed to intercepting missiles. Emergency services were placed on high alert nationwide.

Initial reports from Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency agency indicated no fatalities, though several people sustained minor injuries during the rush to shelters. The IDF confirmed its units were “operating to intercept the threat” and warned the public to remain near protected areas as further attacks remained possible.

Iranian state media and officials claimed the barrage targeted military and security installations in Israel, describing it as retaliation for recent Israeli strikes on Iranian and allied positions in Syria and elsewhere. This latest exchange underscores the widening hostilities, which now involve Iran-backed groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, and has resulted in heavy bombardments across the Middle East in recent weeks.

Military analysts note the direct missile launches from Iranian soil represent one of the most overt confrontations between the two nations in years. While Israel’s advanced air defence systems have successfully intercepted many projectiles in past waves, the persistent threat raises the risk of a broader regional war.

International observers and several governments have issued urgent calls for de-escalation to prevent further destabilisation of the already volatile Middle East. The situation remains fluid, with authorities in Israel advising continued vigilance amid expectations of potential additional launches.
