Lawal’s Defection to APC Unites Zamfara for Development

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move a senior party figure describes as pivotal for the state’s political future.

The announcement was made on Monday in Gusau by Governor Lawal’s deputy, Malam Mani Mummuni, following a stakeholders’ consultative meeting. Dr. Abdullahi Shinkafi, a prominent APC chieftain in Zamfara, addressed party supporters in Gusau on Thursday, stating the governor’s defection would accelerate development efforts in the state.

Dr. Shinkafi emphasized that as the new APC leader in Zamfara, Governor Lawal must prioritize uniting the party’s various factions to prevent “anti-party activities” ahead of the 2027 general elections. He highlighted the importance of collaborating with key stakeholders, particularly former Governor Abdul’aziz Yari, who he credited with building a robust political structure for the APC across the state.

“The governor must work hand in hand with all relevant stakeholders, especially the former governor, Abdul’aziz Yari who invested massively in the party,” Dr. Shinkafi said. He noted that the APC in Zamfara is now a “large family,” distinct from the PDP’s previous structure, requiring inclusive leadership.

Dr. Shinkafi assured the governor of his continued support and urged the state government to focus on resolving the persistent security challenges affecting Zamfara. He also called for greater collaboration with the Federal Government to attract development projects.

Governor Lawal’s switch marks a significant realignment in Zamfara politics, a state with a history of volatile party dynamics. His arrival as the APC’s gubernatorial leader is expected to reshape the party’s strategy and cohesion for the next electoral cycle. The success of this unification effort will likely influence the APC’s prospects in Zamfara during the 2027 elections, while the governor’s ability to balance internal party politics with pressing state security concerns remains a critical focus for observers.
