Gowon Commends Tinubu for Nigeria Security and Development

Former Nigerian Leader Gowon Praises President Tinubu’s Efforts on Security and Development

Lagos, Nigeria — Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon has publicly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s efforts to tackle Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic and security challenges. The endorsement came after a private meeting between the two leaders in Abuja on Saturday.

Speaking to journalists following the discussion, General Gowon, who led Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, asserted that the president is exerting maximum effort across all critical areas. “As far as it goes, isn’t he doing the best he can all round? Political, economic, social, etc., and of course the major problem that we have today — security,” Gowon stated. He emphasized that Tinubu is “doing everything to deal with that for the good of Nigeria.”

When probed about specific sectors requiring greater attention, Gowon declined to single out any area. He stressed the need for a holistic national approach, saying, “There is no particular place. He’s got to look after the interests of Nigeria in all areas.” This perspective frames the administration’s challenges as interconnected, requiring balanced policy attention.

Gowon clarified that the purpose of his visit was to personally thank the president and acknowledge the government’s work. “I came to see him and to thank him for all the good work that he’s doing for the country,” he said, noting their review of economic progress and other developments. He specifically credited Tinubu’s leadership on the foremost national issue, reiterating, “The major problem that we have today is security. He’s doing everything to deal with it for the good of Nigeria and for the good of all Nigerians.”

He further argued that resolving the complex security crisis—encompassing insurgency, banditry, and separatist agitation—ultimately rests with the federal government. “The problem that is happening today — it is only the government, Mr President, that can rally and deal with it, and he is dealing with it the best he can without creating any problem for the country,” Gowon remarked.

The meeting and Gowon’s subsequent praise provide a significant morale boost for the Tinubu administration, which faces public pressure over economic reforms and persistent insecurity. As a revered historical figure, Gowon’s public support underscores a narrative of presidential commitment amid formidable challenges. His comments highlight the administration’s stated priority of securing the nation and fostering development, framing these as comprehensive, ongoing national endeavors rather than isolated failures or successes. The endorsement may be interpreted as an attempt to foster national unity and encourage patience with the government’s multifaceted strategy.
