NYSC Confirms Death of Corps Member in Abeokuta, Staff Member Arrested

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed the death of a corps member in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and announced that a staff member is in custody following suspected involvement in the incident.

In a statement released on Tuesday, NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations Caroline Embu stated that the matter is under active investigation by relevant security agencies. The staff member linked to the case has been apprehended.

“The Scheme is aware of the news circulating in the media concerning the suspected involvement of a staff member. We wish to confirm that the matter is currently under investigation by relevant security agencies, and the individual concerned has been taken into custody,” the statement read.

The NYSC management extended condolences to the deceased’s family, describing the event as tragic. It pledged full cooperation with law enforcement to establish the facts and ensure justice is served, emphasizing that the safety, welfare, and dignity of corps members remain a top priority.

The scheme also reiterated its commitment to a strict code of conduct for all personnel, stating it would not tolerate misconduct or abuse of office.

The reported incident in Abeokuta has sparked public discourse on social media, with Nigerians expressing concerns over corps member safety and the conduct of some NYSC officials, particularly at the local government level. Some users cited prior alleged complaints about officials, including Local Government Inspectors (LGIs), suggesting previous issues were unaddressed.

One commenter urged the government to enforce security measures for corps members, while another criticized the NYSC for not commenting on other recent cases involving corps members.

The NYSC has urged the public to refrain from speculation as investigations continue. Authorities are expected to provide further details upon the conclusion of the ongoing probe.
