APC Extends Caretaker Tenure in Ekiti, Osun After Convention Decisions

APC Extends Caretaker Tenures in Ekiti, Osun, Dissolves NWC at National Convention

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has extended the tenure of its caretaker committee executives in Ekiti and Osun states by six months, a decision aimed at ensuring administrative stability ahead of future electoral activities. The approval came during the party’s 8th National Convention in Abuja on Friday, its highest decision-making body.

Senator Barau Jibrin, who moved the motion, explained that the current caretaker committees at ward, local government, and state levels were originally set to expire in March 2026. However, he cited ongoing political developments that make organizing fresh congresses impracticable at this time. The extension, he stated, is necessary for proper coordination, consolidation, and preparation for the eventual conduct of congresses in the two states. The motion, seconded by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, was unanimously ratified by delegates.

In a separate but related move, the convention dissolved the existing National Working Committee (NWC) to pave the way for the election of new national officers. The motion, moved by National Legal Adviser Abdulkarim Kana and referencing Article 13.1 of the party’s constitution, was seconded by Deputy National Secretary Prof. Abdulkarim Oluopolekana and adopted without dissent.

Furthermore, delegates adopted a motion moved by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, establishing consensus as the primary mode for electing the incoming national leadership. Abbas argued that a defined electoral method would guide proceedings and ensure the outcome reflects the collective will of party members. The motion was seconded by Kaduna State Governor and Vice-Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Senator Uba Sani.

The convention also formally ratified ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses previously conducted across the country. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who moved the motion, affirmed that these earlier congresses were held in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act and party guidelines, thereby strengthening the party’s grassroots structure. This motion was seconded by Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the PGF and Governor of Imo State.

All motions presented at the convention received unanimous approval from the delegates. The decisions collectively set the stage for a transition in the party’s national leadership while managing interim administrative structures in key states, positioning the APC for upcoming electoral cycles.
