Obi Blasts Electoral Law, Alleges Govt Plot Against 2027 Bid

Former Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi has alleged that the federal government is actively working to prevent his participation in the 2027 presidential election, describing himself as the most qualified aspirant.

Obi made the claims during a 60-minute interview on Magic FM Aba, monitored by media outlets. He stated directly that the current administration is “bent on making sure I am not a candidate for any party” in the next electoral cycle. The former Labour Party (LP) flagbearer and ex-Governor of Anambra State positioned himself as a necessary intervention for Nigeria’s economic and leadership crises, citing his background in business and administration.

Separately, Obi criticized the new Electoral Act signed by President Bola Tinubu, calling it “shameful” for not classifying electoral forgery as a prosecutable offence. He argued that such an omission undermines the integrity of the electoral process.

During the broadcast, it was noted that Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were in Aba to receive Obi, suggesting ongoing political engagements. The ADC had previously been used as a platform by Obi before his 2023 LP candidacy.

Obi’s statements introduce a new dimension to pre-election dynamics, highlighting potential legal and political barriers for high-profile opposition figures. His critique of the electoral framework aligns with broader concerns among civil society groups about the robustness of Nigeria’s voting regulations ahead of 2027. The federal government has not issued a formal response to the allegations.

The comments underscore the persistent political tensions surrounding ballot access and electoral reforms in Nigeria. As the 2027 election cycle approaches, scrutiny on the neutrality of state institutions and the inclusivity of the electoral law is expected to intensify. Obi’s prominence ensures his allegations will fuel public and political debate on the fairness of the process.
