Popular Nollywood actress Foluke Daramola has described her marriage to husband Kayode Salako as unconventional, stating she “does not feel like I’m married” due to the significant personal freedom she enjoys.
Speaking on the African A-List podcast, Daramola characterized Salako as “the definition of peace” and her “greatest cheerleader.” She illustrated the extent of her autonomy, explaining that if she decided to relocate to Canada for a year, her husband would support the decision without objection. “It doesn’t mean he doesn’t love me; he just feels like he shouldn’t cage me,” she said. Daramola noted that while conflicts occur, they are typically resolved within hours.
These remarks emerge against a complex backdrop in the couple’s marital history. In 2022, Kayode Salako publicly confirmed his marriage to a second wife, Oluwafunke Oyegoke-Salako, while remaining legally married to Daramola. Salako defended the decision by citing the couple’s 13-year marriage at the time, which had not produced a biological child. He framed the second marriage within a context of family expansion.
Daramola and Salako were married in 2010. In Nigeria, polygamy is legally permitted for men under customary and Islamic law, though it often sparks public discourse, particularly when involving public figures.
Daramola’s current portrayal of a liberating and peaceful marital dynamic contrasts with the earlier public revelation of her husband’s polygamous choice. Her comments highlight a personal experience of marital partnership centered on friendship and unrestrained personal pursuit, even as the structural reality of her husband’s additional marriage remains a documented fact. The situation underscores diverse models of partnership within contemporary Nigerian society, where personal narratives of marital harmony can coexist with legally recognized polygamous arrangements. The story continues to draw attention to evolving conversations about marriage, autonomy, and family within the Nigerian entertainment industry and beyond.
