Nollywood producer and actor Olaide Olabanji has publicly accused actress Mercy Aigbe of dismissing their professional history after he helped launch her career in the Nigerian film industry. Olabanji claims that Aigbe responded to his early mentorship with indifference and hostility, culminating in her blocking him on social media.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Oyinmomo interview program, Olabanji recounted discovering Aigbe working in a Lagos shop in 2004. After confirming her interest in acting, he cast her in a production that marked her official entry into Nigerian cinema. According to Olabanji, the actress’s demeanor shifted as her public profile expanded. He described a pattern of strained encounters, noting that Aigbe now avoids direct communication and maintains a reserved presence during industry functions.
Olabanji further alleged that the professional rift has intensified. “To her, it is as if I should no longer exist,” he stated, emphasizing that he was unprepared for the shift after years of collaboration. The filmmaker clarified that his remarks are based on observed interactions and public sightings rather than private negotiations. The comments align with ongoing discussions within Nollywood regarding early career support, industry attribution, and the natural evolution of professional relationships as actors transition to independent productions.
Mercy Aigbe, a prominent figure in both Yoruba-language and mainstream Nigerian cinema, has not issued a statement addressing the claims. Her representatives have not confirmed whether a formal clarification or public response will be released. Industry professionals frequently navigate shifting creative alliances, and public commentary on past collaborations remains a recurring feature of Nigeria’s entertainment landscape.
Aigbe’s team has not yet provided an official comment. Media Talk Africa will track the matter and publish verified updates as additional information or statements become available.
