Afrobeats artist Omah Lay has described the Nigerian music scene as deeply divided, with loyalties split between supporters of Davido and those of Wizkid. Speaking in a recent interview with American outlet The Fader, the singer—born Omah Stanley Didia—explained that this division has shaped the industry’s dynamics.
Reflecting on his own experience, Omah Lay revealed that in 2024 he unfollowed Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy—collectively known as the Afrobeats “Big 3″—on social media. He said his decision stemmed from dissatisfaction with what he perceived as an outdated approach to leading the genre.
“The whole Nigerian Afrobeats scene is very separated,” he said. “It’s like if you’re with Davido, you’re on one side; if you’re with Wizkid, you’re on the other.”
Despite this, Omah Lay spoke warmly of his collaboration with Davido on the track “With You,” describing their working relationship as natural and saying it helped him appreciate Davido’s personality. He acknowledged that Davido faces significant criticism, partly due to his wealthy background, but praised his determination and drive.
Omah Lay’s comments shed light on the competitive and sometimes factional nature of Nigeria’s music industry, where artist alliances and rivalries can influence both public perception and creative partnerships.
