Fela receives Grammy Lifetime Achievement award

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the Nigerian pioneer of Afrobeat, has made history by becoming the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This significant announcement was made during a broadcast of American Idol in the United States, marking a landmark achievement for African music on the international stage. Fela will be honored in the Early Influence category, alongside notable artists such as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, country rocker Gram Parsons, and Cuban singer Celia Cruz. Additionally, Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu will be inducted in the Performance category.

The selection process for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame involved over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals who cast their votes to determine the honorees. Other prominent nominees, including Shakira, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, and Pink, did not make the final cut. The induction ceremony is set to take place on November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

Fela’s recognition comes on the heels of another historic achievement earlier this year, when he became the first African musician to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Renowned for his politically charged lyrics, intricate rhythms, and fearless activism, Fela’s influence transcends music, significantly shaping cultural and political discourse across the African continent and beyond. This latest honor further cements his legacy as one of the most transformative figures in global music history.
