China handed over the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, marking the latest milestone in Sino‑West African cooperation. The modern, multifunctional complex, built by China, is intended to boost the operational capacity of the regional bloc and serve as a platform for member states to advance regional development.
The hand‑over ceremony was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Yu Dunhai, and ECOWAS Commission President Dr Omar Touray, among other officials. Ambassador Yu described the building as a “modern, intelligent and multifunctional facility” that will enhance the effectiveness of the ECOWAS Commission. He called the event “a historical moment” in the three‑decade relationship between China and the West African bloc, emphasizing the deepened political trust and continued practical cooperation between the two parties.
Yu highlighted that China‑ECOWAS ties are built on mutual respect, equality, and win‑win cooperation, without political conditions or interference in sovereignty. He noted that the partnership has consistently responded to the concrete needs of African countries, citing ongoing projects such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port, railway lines, roads and airports in Nigeria. The ambassador also underscored the potential for agricultural collaboration and food‑security initiatives, and mentioned that Huawei has trained over 70,000 Nigerian youths in information technology.
Dr Touray expressed gratitude for China’s support, stating that the new headquarters provides a “good working space for the bureaucracy” responsible for implementing decisions on trade, peace, security, and the free movement of people. He added that China’s zero‑tariff policy for African exports presents a significant economic opportunity for ECOWAS member states.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu‑Ojukwu, said the ceremony signified more than the opening of a building, describing it as a reaffirmation of unity and a renewed commitment to regional integration, peace, and sustainable development.
The hand‑over reflects the broader trajectory of China‑Africa relations, which have accelerated since President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to China in 2024. Both sides view the new ECOWAS headquarters as a concrete symbol of friendship and shared development, with expectations that the facility will enable more efficient coordination of regional policies and projects across West Africa.
