The National Association of Nigerian Students – Republic of Niger Chapter (NANS‑RN) has formally disavowed Abubakar Muhammad Uwaisu, stating that he has no legitimate claim to the title of National President of the organization.
In a press release signed by NANS‑RN Secretary‑General Mustapha Y. Haruna, the association described Uwaisu’s self‑identification as “false, baseless and a deliberate act of impersonation.” The statement said the group was compelled to confront what it called “persistent and misleading activities” by the individual, emphasizing that he has never occupied, nor currently holds, the office of National President.
According to the release, the recognized leadership of NANS‑RN remains the sole legitimate body representing Nigerian students in the Republic of Niger. “We wish to categorically state, for the record and for the awareness of the public, relevant government agencies, diplomatic missions and the international community, that Mr. Abubakar Muhammad Uwaisu is not, and has never been, the National President of NANS‑RN,” the document read.
The association further questioned Uwaisu’s credibility, noting that leadership positions within the student body are founded on legitimacy, due process and the confidence of members. It also alleged that he fails to meet eligibility criteria for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and has not satisfied required screening and aptitude standards.
The release referenced alleged irregularities in academic arrangements linked to the International Université Alnahada in Gusau, Zamfara State, which the National Universities Commission (NUC) has reportedly already scrutinised. Additionally, NANS‑RN accused Uwaisu of making disparaging remarks about Musa S. Mamman, Secretary‑General of the Nigeria‑Niger Joint Commission, describing the comments as unethical and unbecoming of a representative of Nigerian students.
NANS‑RN urged media outlets, government bodies and the public to disregard any statements or representations made by Uwaisu in the capacity of National President. The association specifically cautioned the NYSC, the Federal Ministry of Education and other relevant institutions against engaging with him in any official capacity. It also called on international partners, diplomatic missions and student organisations to verify communications through the recognised NANS‑RN channels.
“The authentic leadership of NANS‑RN remains committed to upholding the integrity, unity and welfare of Nigerian students in the Republic of Niger and will not hesitate to pursue all lawful measures to protect the image and legitimacy of the association,” the statement concluded.
Stakeholders are advised to remain vigilant and to seek confirmation from the official NANS‑RN leadership before responding to any claims or outreach attributed to an alleged National President.
