Binani Defects from ADC to NDC, Cites Supporters and Policy

Former Adamawa gubernatorial aspirant and former senator Aisha Dahiru, popularly known as Binani, formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday, citing alignment with the party’s policy‑driven ethos and the expressed wishes of her supporters.

Binani, who represented Adamawa Central in the 9th National Assembly, was received by NDC National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson at a ceremony in Abuja. In her remarks, she said the decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was the result of a “careful study of the NDC’s constitution,” which she described as reflecting “a strong commitment to governance anchored on clear policies and internal democracy.”

The senator addressed criticism over her recent party switch, noting that political affiliations often change in response to evolving circumstances. “Some may point out that eight or nine months ago I was in another party. I will never condemn where I came from. Politics is dynamic and often local in nature, and decisions are made based on prevailing realities,” she said.

According to Binani, the move was heavily influenced by her constituency. “Many of my supporters have already joined the NDC and established a strong presence in Adamawa. The state now boasts one of the highest numbers of registered members in the party,” she added, emphasizing that her actions are guided by the interests of her base.

Dickson urged women and youths to consider the NDC as a platform for meaningful participation, criticizing other parties for marginalising women after elections. He highlighted the constitutional guarantee of freedom of association and positioned the NDC as a credible alternative capable of delivering results. Former Bayelsa Governor and former Senate President David Mark echoed the invitation, encouraging dissatisfied political actors to join the party.

NDC National Chairman Senator Moses Cleopas described the organization as rooted in ideology, unity and inclusiveness, stressing its commitment to affirmative action and youth involvement. He presented Binani with her membership card and pledged party support.

The party’s North‑East Vice Chairman, Danlami Arabs, framed Binani’s induction as part of a broader movement advancing women’s leadership in northern Nigeria. National Women Leader Dudu Manuga lauded her as a “flag‑bearer… breaking barriers and shattering ceilings,” underscoring the significance of increased female participation in politics.

Binani concluded by thanking the NDC’s National Working Committee for the warm welcome and affirmed her intention to contribute to the party’s growth at both state and national levels, emphasizing fairness, equity, justice, transparency and strengthened internal democracy as essential to the party’s success.

The ceremony marks Binani’s transition from the ADC to the NDC, reflecting shifting political alignments ahead of upcoming electoral cycles in Nigeria.
