APC Gombe picks Jamilu Gwamna as 2027 gov candidate

Gombe State APC names consensus candidate for 2027 governorship race

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe State announced on Sunday that former Gombe State Commissioner for Information, Jamilu Ishiyaku Gwamna will be the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election. The decision was made during an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting chaired by the state governor and APC national leader, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

Gwamna’s emergence follows the elimination of former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, who withdrew from the contest after party stakeholders coalesced around Gwamna. The consensus process, aimed at presenting a unified front ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle, also produced consensus candidates for other elective positions in the state.

In addition to the governorship ticket, the meeting ratified candidates for the three senatorial districts, six seats in the House of Representatives, and all 24 constituencies of the Gombe State House of Assembly. Party officials said the selections reflect a strategic effort to balance regional representation, professional expertise, and party loyalty.

The APC’s move comes as it seeks to consolidate its dominance in the northeast, where it has governed Gombe State since 2019 under Governor Yahaya. The consensus model, increasingly used by political parties in Nigeria, aims to avoid intra‑party primaries that can lead to fragmentation and costly legal battles.

Stakeholders described the process as “inclusive” and “consultative,” noting that representatives from party wards, youth wings, women’s groups, and traditional leaders participated. The party’s national secretariat will now oversee the formal submission of the candidates’ names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in accordance with the electoral timetable.

Observers note that the APC’s early selection of a governorship candidate may influence the dynamics of the 2027 elections, giving the party ample time to mobilize resources, craft policy platforms, and engage voters across Gombe’s diverse constituencies. The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has yet to announce its candidates for the upcoming contests.

The consensus candidates are expected to be officially gazetted by the APC within the next fortnight, after which campaign activities are likely to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections scheduled for February 2027.
