Kano political thugs kill five, Amnesty urges urgent probe

Amnesty International Nigeria has urged Nigerian authorities to launch an immediate investigation into the killing of five people in Kano state, alleging that armed political thugs were responsible for the violence.

In a statement posted on the organisation’s X account on Wednesday, Amnesty said the incident represents a sharp escalation in political violence in Kano, describing it as the most lethal episode of “political thuggery” recorded in recent years.

The group said video footage reviewed by its investigators shows groups of armed men pursuing individuals who attempted to flee and then shooting them in public streets. Other clips reportedly depict victims lying in pools of blood after the attacks.

According to Amnesty, the assailants wore clothing associated with the ruling party and were heard chanting violent slogans. The statement added that there are reports of political supporters targeting opponents, whether the targets are real or merely perceived.

Amnesty disclosed that it is probing allegations that prominent Kano politicians and government officials may be linked to the killings. “Nigerian authorities, politicians and political parties must respect the rule of law and ensure that lives and property are protected before, during and after political events,” the organisation wrote.

The group warned that the violence threatens fundamental rights, noting that freedom of association and movement are being compromised. “The trend of violence that is becoming rampant in Kano is undermining free participation of people in political affairs,” Amnesty said. It further stated that the rise in armed thuggery, allegedly backed by some politicians, is creating a climate of fear that infringes on citizens’ right to engage in politics.

Amnesty highlighted the broader implications for democracy in the state, calling the pattern of attacks in recent months a growing threat to public safety. The organisation called on law‑enforcement agencies to act swiftly, hold the perpetrators accountable, and investigate any individuals who may have sponsored the attacks.

The request comes amid heightened tension ahead of upcoming elections, when political competition in northern Nigeria has increasingly been marked by clashes between rival factions. Human‑rights monitors have documented a surge in politically motivated killings and intimidation in several states, prompting calls for stronger protection of civil liberties and more transparent investigations.

International observers have emphasized that timely and impartial inquiries are essential to restore public confidence in the electoral process and to prevent further erosion of democratic norms. Amnesty’s appeal underscores the urgency of addressing political violence in Kano and ensuring that the rule of law prevails across Nigeria.
