The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has announced the death of His Excellency Festus Gontebanye Mogae, former President of Botswana, 2008 recipient of the Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership and former Chair of the Ibrahim Prize Committee.
Mogae served as Botswana’s third president from 1998 to 2008. During his decade‑long tenure he was widely recognised for his integrity, fiscal discipline and commitment to transparent governance, which helped preserve the country’s reputation for political stability and economic growth.
A defining feature of his presidency was the response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Mogae mobilised political will, introduced innovative policies and forged partnerships that expanded treatment and care across Botswana. The country’s approach became a model for other nations confronting the disease, saving countless lives and positioning Botswana at the forefront of the global AIDS response.
After leaving office, Mogae remained active in African development and international affairs. He continued to champion HIV/AIDS initiatives as head of the Champions for an AIDS‑Free Generation and contributed to global efforts on climate change, public health and peacebuilding, including support for the peace process in South Sudan.
As a laureate of the Ibrahim Prize and later its Committee Chair, Mogae played a central role in promoting good governance on the continent. Colleagues noted his independence, wisdom and sense of responsibility as key to maintaining the prize’s credibility.
Mo Ibrahim, founder and chair of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, said: “Festus was not only a close friend but a steadfast supporter of the Foundation from its inception. He shared our belief in strong, principled leadership and used his experience to advance Africa’s development, especially in health, dignity and peace.”
The Foundation extends its deepest condolences to President Mogae’s family, friends and the people of Botswana. His legacy of principled leadership, public service and dedication to Africa’s progress is expected to influence future generations of African leaders.
