Why I can't complain about downsides of fame, success - Don Jazzy

Nigerian record producer and Mavins CEO Michael Collins Ajereh—widely known as Don Jazzy—has publicly declared alternative‑rock singer‑songwriter Johnny Drille his “best musician.” Speaking on the Crea8torium podcast, Don Jazzy praised Drille’s versatility and originality, stating that the artist stands alone in Nigeria’s music landscape.

During the interview, Don Jazzy noted, “If you look at the Nigerian music industry right now, there is nobody like Johnny Drille. He is in a world of his own. He is the complete musician I know—versatile, writes, mixes, sings, and does everything.” He added that Drille’s live performances mirror his studio recordings, highlighting the artist’s consistency across settings.

Johnny Drille, whose real name is John Ighodaro, first gained public attention after participating in the 2013 reality show Project Fame West Africa. He later signed with Mavins Records in 2016, releasing the debut single “What If” and subsequent hits such as “Amin,” “Wait for Me,” and the Grammy‑shortlisted “My Love.” His music blends folk, pop, and indie influences, distinguishing him from mainstream Afrobeats trends.

Don Jazzy’s endorsement aligns with Mavins’ broader strategy to diversify its roster beyond the typical Afrobeats sound. The label has historically nurtured a range of talents, from R&B vocalist Tiwa Savage to hip‑hop act Ladipoe. By highlighting Drille’s “complete” musicianship—encompassing songwriting, production, and performance—Mavins signals a continued commitment to artistic development across genres.

Industry observers view the remarks as a potential catalyst for increased visibility for alternative and indie artists within Nigeria’s dominant Afro‑pop market. While Drille has already amassed a dedicated fan base domestically and abroad, formal recognition from a leading producer could open avenues for collaborations, festival bookings, and broader media exposure.
