The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, are being held today at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, United States. Many Nigerians are celebrating the emergence of singer Temilade Oyeniyi, known as Tems, on the nomination list. Tems, who won a Grammy award on February 5, was nominated for the 2023 Oscars in the Best Original Song category for “Lift Me Up,” a collaboration with Rihanna, music producer Ludwig Göransson, and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.

Since receiving the Grammy, Tems has become a source of motivation for many, and her fan base continues to grow. She could also become an Oscar winner if Rihanna wins the award, even though Tems is listed only as a contributor to the song’s music and lyrics. The guidelines for the 95th ceremony’s “Music (Original Score)” category state that only the principal composer(s) or songwriter(s) responsible for the conception and execution of the work as a whole are eligible for an award. The rules expressly exclude partial contributors, speculative writers, producers or arrangers not responsible for creating the original music, and music supervisors.

Reports indicate that the multiverse sci‑fi smash “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has received 11 nominations, while the Irish dark comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” and the World War I drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” have each earned nine. Winners in the various categories receive a golden statuette, officially called the “Academy Award of Merit.”
