England midfielder Jordan Henderson has completed a move to Chelsea on a two-year contract after his deal with Brentford was terminated by mutual agreement.
The 36-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge following a nomadic spell that included a brief stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq and a half-season at Ajax before returning to the Premier League with Brentford. He made 32 top-flight appearances for the Bees last season.
Henderson, who captained Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2019-20 alongside Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup honours, said the opportunity to work under manager Xabi Alonso proved decisive.
“Given the size of the club, the manager who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” Henderson said. “For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
The Sunderland academy graduate made his Premier League debut against Chelsea in November 2008. He went on to earn 91 England caps and featured in seven major tournaments, including the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy. This summer he became the first Englishman to appear at four World Cups, though his tournament ended prematurely after a broken arm sustained in a freak accident while jumping over advertising hoardings following a last-16 victory over Mexico.
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, missing out on European qualification. Alonso has moved swiftly to reshape the squad, with Henderson becoming the tenth arrival of a busy transfer window.
The club secured a British-record £117 million deal for England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, while 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck joined from Brighton for a reported £5 million. Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco also arrived, alongside defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million, right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £42 million and winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting for £40 million.
Further additions include striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, left-back Denner from Corinthians and 17-year-old forward Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty.
On the outgoing side, defender Trevoh Chalobah departed for Como in a deal worth more than £30 million.
