Mia Bieniemy, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, is recovering after being shot at the family’s Virginia residence on July 26, according to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.
Speaking to reporters, Reid confirmed that Mia Bieniemy remains hospitalized but continues to improve daily. “On the Eric Bieniemy side, Mia’s doing better, she keeps improving by the day, so that’s a positive,” Reid said. He added there is no timetable for Eric Bieniemy’s return to the team, emphasizing the coach needs to “take care of business” and will return when ready.
The shooting has led to criminal charges against the couple’s son, Elijah Bieniemy. He was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. Elijah Bieniemy has remained in custody since his arrest.
Legal proceedings have been delayed while Elijah Bieniemy undergoes mental Health evaluations. Court dates have not been rescheduled pending completion of those assessments.
Eric Bieniemy, a two-time Super Bowl champion as Kansas City’s offensive coordinator, has been absent from team activities since the incident. The Chiefs organization has not provided a specific timeline for his return, prioritizing family matters over football obligations.
The case continues to develop as both the medical recovery and legal process unfold. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances of the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation and pending court proceedings.
