Outstanding pupils and teachers from public primary schools across Enugu State were honoured on Wednesday at the grand finale of the Computer Appreciation Test Competition, an event organisers said validates the sweeping education reforms of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration. The competition was organised by Eco Ventures Nigeria Publishers Limited in collaboration with the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) at the board’s headquarters in Enugu.
The ceremony brought together education stakeholders to celebrate academic excellence, digital literacy and innovation among primary school pupils. Miss Nnebuife Mmesoma of Igbariam Primary School, Achara Layout, emerged as the overall winner, receiving a golden trophy, a computer tablet and exercise books. Master Onovo Emmanuel of Smart Green School, Isi-Uzo, placed second, while Miss Okepe Mary Cynthia of Model Primary School, Nsukka, took third position; both runners-up also received tablets and exercise books.
In the Spelling Bee and Debate categories, Obe Smart Green School secured the top prize ahead of Queens Smart Green School, Enugu Campus 1. The Quiz Competition, contested by representatives from the state’s educational zones, saw Enugu South Zone, represented by Miss Nnebuife Mmesoma, claim victory with 24 points. Enugu North Zone, represented by Miss Okepe Mary Cynthia, finished second with 20 points, while Enugu West Zone, represented by Odineto Chimamanda, placed third with 13½ points.
The competition featured pupils from public primary schools across 12 of the state’s 17 local government areas. All participants received exercise books in recognition of their efforts.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Eco Ventures Nigeria Publishers Limited, Dr Augustine Okoh, described the competition as part of the company’s commitment to promoting computer literacy and supporting the state government’s education transformation agenda. He commended Governor Mbah’s investments in the Smart Green Schools initiative, which he said is redefining teaching and learning through technology and digital skills acquisition.
Okoh disclosed that Eco Ventures has partnered with the Enugu State Government since 2008, supplying 286 computer sets with accessories, 108 power generating sets and more than 58,000 exercise books to schools across the state. He added that the company would provide additional tablets and educational materials to participating pupils while offering free computer training for teachers to strengthen their digital teaching competencies.
The ceremony attracted members of the ENSUBEB Board, directors, administrators from Local Government Education Authorities, head teachers and classroom teachers. Stakeholders noted that the event underscores the transformation taking place in Enugu’s education sector, where unprecedented investments in Smart Green Schools, digital infrastructure and teacher capacity development continue to position the state as a national leader in basic education and human capital development.
