The political chessboard for 2027 is already taking shape. On Monday, Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential flagbearer, and his running mate Rabi’u Kwankwaso, sat down with a clutch of the party’s governorship candidates in Abuja for what insiders describe as a no-nonsense strategy session.
The meeting, confirmed in a statement on the party’s verified X handle, was less about pleasantries and more about the nuts and bolts of winning. The leaders drilled down on election preparedness, pored over their collective readiness, and hammered out a blueprint for coordinated campaigns aimed at sweeping victories up and down the ballot.
It wasn’t just a photo-op. The room carried serious weight. On hand were the NDC’s governorship contenders for Bauchi State, Ibrahim Kashim; Sokoto State, Shamsu Aliyu; and Borno State, Sunusi Kashim Ibrahim. Also in the mix was the ever-present political tactician Buba Galadima, alongside the party’s state chairmen for Kebbi and Sokoto, Alhaji Mustapha Umar and Alhaji Bello Sani Yabo, respectively, plus a cadre of other senior figures.
The takeaway? The NDC is not waiting for the clock to tick down. With Obi and Kwankwaso at the helm, the party is signalling it intends to fight every inch of the electoral turf, from the presidency down to the state houses, long before the first ballot is cast.
