The Vice-Chancellor of Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, Professor Timothy Terseer Alabar, has confirmed the arrest of five suspects linked to the killing of a senior academic at the institution.
Professor Alabar made the disclosure on Monday while addressing journalists in Makurdi. He identified the victim as Professor Gabriel Saawuan Nyityo, who taught in the Department of History. The lecturer was shot dead at his residence in Makurdi on July 7, along with his younger sibling, in an attack carried out by gunmen.
The Vice-Chancellor described the double killing as a major setback for the university and the Department of History. He said security agencies had briefed the institution on the arrests, adding that the suspects are reportedly from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
Professor Alabar did not provide further details on the circumstances leading to the arrests or the possible motive behind the attack. He said the university is relying on security operatives to conclude investigations and ensure prosecution.
The killing has sparked concern among staff and students at the university, which was formerly known as Benue State University before its renaming in honour of the late Catholic priest and educationist, Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu. The institution, located in the Benue State capital, has faced periodic security challenges in recent years, mirroring broader instability in parts of north-central Nigeria.
Academic activities have continued at the university, though the mood remains subdued within the Department of History, where Professor Nyityo was a respected figure. Colleagues remember him as a dedicated scholar who contributed significantly to historical research and teaching.
The Vice-Chancellor urged the university community to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to the safety of staff and students, noting that additional security measures have been implemented around campus and staff residential areas.
