The Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced distribution of sensitive electoral materials across Osun State’s 30 local government areas ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
INEC National Commissioner Kunle Ajayi, who is overseeing the state’s election, confirmed the development on Friday. The distribution is taking place at the Central Bank of Nigeria office in Osogbo, the state capital.
Ajayi explained that the operation was delayed by the late arrival of newly printed ballot papers and other materials from Abuja. The reprinting became necessary following the recent inclusion of the Social Democratic Party on the ballot.
On Wednesday, the commission added SDP candidate Francis Ajala and his running mate, Faseke Oladipo, to the governorship ballot. This brings the total number of political parties contesting the election to 15.
“Consequently, the ballot papers for the election, scheduled to hold on Saturday, 15th August 2026, are being reproduced to reflect this addition, bringing to 15 the total number of political parties contesting the election,” INEC said in a statement. “The result sheets for the election are also being reproduced alongside the ballot papers to reflect the inclusion of the SDP candidate.”
Ajayi said the commission began distribution immediately upon receipt of materials to ensure all items reach designated locations before polling day.
The election has drawn heightened attention following a series of legal disputes and party defections in recent months. Security agencies have also announced extensive deployments, with the police confirming 15,000 operatives and 30 commissioners of police assigned to the exercise. The Federal Road Safety Corps has deployed 2,500 personnel to manage traffic and ensure free movement on election day.
Civil society groups, including the National Orientation Agency, have called for peaceful and non-violent voting. Meanwhile, political stakeholders continue to Trade accusations over alleged plots to disrupt the process.
INEC has assured the public of its readiness to conduct a credible election despite the last-minute adjustments to ballot materials. The commission says all logistical arrangements are being finalized to meet the Saturday deadline.
