Eagles Rookie QB Payton Leads Yards, Throws TD in Preseason Opener

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Cole Payton provided a rare bright spot in a 24-7 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens, entering the game in the fourth quarter and immediately shifting the offense’s trajectory. With the Eagles resting their starters — including franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts — the backup unit struggled to generate momentum through three quarters. Payton, a fourth-string signal-caller drafted out of North Dakota State, changed that dynamic on his first series.

The 23-year-old finished as the team’s leading passer and rusher, orchestrating Philadelphia’s only scoring drive of the night. Facing fourth-and-3 deep in Ravens territory, Payton scrambled for a 17-yard gain to extend the possession. Two plays later, he evaded pressure and delivered a strike to receiver Erik Ezukanma in the back of the end zone for a touchdown.

“What an opportunity, what a cool environment and then to get to strap it up for the first time with an NFL logo on my chest,” Payton said after the game. “It was a lot of fun. Just a ton of excitement. This is what you dream of, this is what you work for.”

Selected in the later rounds of the draft, Payton arrived in Philadelphia as a developmental prospect. At North Dakota State, he did not earn the starting role until his fifth and final collegiate season, a timeline that underscored his status as a project. Yet his athleticism and playmaking ability — evident both as a runner and a passer — have accelerated his evaluation.

Payton currently sits behind Hurts, veteran Andy Dalton, and second-year quarterback Tanner McKee on the depth chart. However, his performance has strengthened his case for a roster spot. The Eagles could carry four quarterbacks, or the loser of the competition between McKee and Dalton for the primary backup role may not make the final 53-man roster. Either scenario opens a pathway for Payton.

While it remains early in the evaluation process, the coaching staff now has tangible game footage of Payton operating under live conditions — a critical data point for a player whose college resume lacked extensive starting experience. His composure on the game-winning drive, particularly the fourth-down conversion and the touchdown throw under duress, suggested an advanced feel for the position.

The Eagles’ quarterback room is among the deepest in the league, but Payton’s emergence adds an intriguing layer to roster decisions ahead of the regular season. His blend of mobility and improvisational skill aligns with modern offensive trends, and his work ethic — forged through years of waiting for a chance at North Dakota State — has resonated internally.

Next steps include continued practice reps and at least one more preseason appearance to test consistency. For now, Payton has turned a low-stakes exhibition into a credible argument for inclusion. In a league where developmental quarterbacks often vanish into obscurity, he has forced the conversation toward retention.
