Bauchi State Police Command has recovered a consignment of vandalised railway sleepers and arrested a suspected member of a syndicate allegedly involved in the theft of public infrastructure, authorities confirmed.
According to a press release signed by Police Public Relations Officer SP Nafiu Habib, the command received credible intelligence at approximately 12:30 a.m. on August 17, 2026, regarding the vandalism of railway properties within the Bauchi metropolis. Operatives attached to A Division Township swiftly acted on the information, tracing the stolen materials to a residential building in Doya Quarters.
The discovery caught investigators off guard. The command noted that operatives had anticipated the stolen items might be concealed in a warehouse or government facility rather than a private residence. The entire consignment of vandalised railway sleepers was recovered and evacuated to the police station. The operation concluded at approximately 3:30 a.m. on August 18 with the arrest of a male suspect identified as Abubakar Sanusi.
The command stated that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged syndicate. Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station, emphasizing that the protection of national assets requires collective effort between security agencies and members of the public.
Railway infrastructure theft has emerged as a persistent challenge across Nigeria, disrupting transport networks and draining public resources. The recovery in Bauchi underscores the role of intelligence-led policing in combating organised crime targeting critical infrastructure. Stolen railway components, including sleepers and tracks, often feed illicit scrap metal markets, complicating efforts to trace and prosecute perpetrators.
Security analysts have long advocated for enhanced surveillance along vulnerable rail corridors and stricter regulation of scrap metal dealers to disrupt the supply chain. The arrest of Sanusi may provide investigative leads to dismantle broader networks operating across state lines.
The police command reiterated its commitment to sustaining operations against economic sabotage. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
