The clock is ticking toward Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, and Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald has yet to announce whether he will end his retirement and play this year. Asked for an update on Tuesday, head coach Sean McVay offered a brief response: “Nope, nothing new on him.”
The situation has fueled widespread speculation. Months ago, a return appeared inevitable. Since then, Donald has adjusted his target date for a decision at least twice. McVay has emphasized that the organization will not impose an “invisible deadline” on the three-time Defensive Player of the Year. The only firm roster deadline is the Tuesday following Week 13.
Donald has participated in two workouts with the team in recent weeks, intensifying the perception that a comeback is imminent. However, only Donald knows where he stands in evaluating his desire to return. Observers have questioned whether he is chasing another championship, simply misses the game, or is curious to test himself against reduced blocking schemes — though the Rams do not have Myles Garrett on their roster.
Several outcomes remain possible. Donald could rejoin the squad soon and prepare for the season opener in Australia against the San Francisco 49ers. He could delay a decision until later in the year, waiting to confirm the team’s contender status before committing. Alternatively, he may choose not to return at all.
If he does come back, the Rams could place him on the Physically Unable to Perform list or the Non-Football Injury list. That would allow him to be with the team while delaying his debut. He would not be eligible to practice until the club opens a 21-day activation window, after which he would have three weeks to join the 53-man roster.
The core dilemma is straightforward. Donald wants certainty that he can perform at his accustomed elite level. That certainty can only come through practicing or playing against live competition. Until he resolves that question himself, the Rams must move forward with their current roster, keeping the door open for a player who could significantly elevate their defensive prospects for the 2026 campaign.
