Sagagi-led PDP faction kicks as Shekarau inaugurates campaign council in Kano

A faction of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kano led by Shehu Sagagi has rejected the formation and inauguration of the party’s state campaign council for 2023 elections.

On January 5, PDP elders led by a former governor of the state Ibrahim Shekarau, inaugurated the party’s campaign council chaired by Yunusa Dangwani at Meenah Event Center in the state capital.

In response to the inauguration, the state legal adviser for Mr Sagagi’s faction, Isa Wangida, described the act as a contempt of court.

“We note with dismay the illegal and contemptuous act of inaugural ceremony for the PDP  Kano state campaign council led by the so-called caretaker committee,” Mr Wangida said in a statement on Sunday.

Mr Wangida noted that Mr Sagagi-led led state executives of the party had filed an appeal and stay of execution at the supreme court, which allows them to maintain the status quo.

Mr Wangida added that the action of the party elders was also a violation of court order issued by Justice A.M Liman of the Federal High Court, Kano wherein he declared Mohammed Abacha as the lawful PDP gubernatorial candidate in the state.

According to Mr Wangida, the “illegal inauguration” was carried out in favor of the sacked candidates.

The legal adviser also drew the attention of state PDP members to the fact that “these same anti-PDP members in Kano state are the ones claiming that we are no longer executives after the judgment of the court of appeal that set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court Abuja.

“But today they are the ones who have only filed a notice of Appeal without even a stay of execution but feels that their candidate is still the Kano gubernatorial candidate of the party.”
