Force PRO Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the police have not yet received INEC’s letter, but they will collaborate with the electoral umpire to investigate the incident arising from the ongoing supplementary election in Adamawa. The Nigeria Police Force has promised a thorough investigation in partnership with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after INEC suspended the collation of last Saturday’s election. The suspension followed Resident Electoral Commissioner Hudu Yunusa‑Ari’s declaration of All Progressives Congress governorship candidate Aisha Dahiru, popularly known as Binani, as governor‑elect.
On Tuesday, INEC announced it would write to Inspector‑General of Police Usman Baba to investigate and prosecute the suspended REC, Yunusa‑Ari, for the unlawful declaration of Binani as the winner of the state governorship election. When asked about the matter, Adejobi confirmed that the police had not yet received any correspondence from INEC. He added that the IGP has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Commissioner of Police on election duty in Adamawa State, Mohammed Barde, and has directed the Commissioner of Police in Gombe State, Etim Equa, to proceed to Adamawa for election security.
Adejobi emphasized, “We have not received any letter, but we will carry out a thorough investigation on the Adamawa incident in collaboration with INEC. If INEC sends a letter, we will treat it as a recommendation as well.” He also noted that the IGP has replaced the Adamawa CP‑election with CP Gombe, Etim Oqua, who has been instructed to go to Yola immediately to conclude the governorship election process. “We are committed to having a more secure and successful process in Adamawa,” he said.
Meanwhile, INEC reconvened on Tuesday and resumed the collation of results for Saturday’s Adamawa supplementary governorship election, with National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee Festus Okoye present at the collation centre.
