The death of trailblazing Nigerian filmmaker and founder of the African Movie Academy Awards, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, was announced on Tuesday morning. She passed away in a hospital in Lagos State. Anyiam-Osigwe was also the President of the Association of Movie Producers, and her contributions to the film industry have left a lasting impact.
Born on March 30, 1969, Anyiam-Osigwe was the only girl among eight siblings and hailed from Nkwerre in Imo State. She pursued higher education at Oxford Brookes University in England, where she earned a degree in Law and Political Science. In 2005, she founded the Africa Film Academy, which hosts an award ceremony recognized as one of the most prestigious for Africans in filmmaking.
In 2015, Anyiam-Osigwe launched the AfricaOne initiative to celebrate Africans in the entertainment industry. Her leadership skills were further recognized in 2020 when she became the National President of the Association of Movie Producers. In addition to her filmmaking achievements, she was also an accomplished author, having written three books of poetry.
Anyiam-Osigwe’s contributions to the film industry were acknowledged in 2019 when she received the African Film Pioneer Award at The African Film Festival. Her career in television began with her discussion show, “Piece off My Mind,” which showcased her talent and passion for storytelling.
