PSV beat Ajax on penalties to win Dutch Cup

PSV Eindhoven edged out Ajax on penalties in the Dutch Cup final on Sunday to successfully defend the trophy in Rotterdam.

Fabio Silva’s winning spot-kick gave PSV their 11th Cup triumph.

Ajax are set to end a completed season without a major trophy for the first time since 2017-18.

The Amsterdam giants sit third in the Eredivisie with four matches to play, three points behind PSV and 11 adrift of leaders Feyenoord.

Ajax took the lead in the 43rd minute as Everton loanee Jarrad Branthwaite put through his own net.

But Thorgan Hazard equalised for PSV midway through the second half after excellent play by rising star Xavi Simons to set him up.

Both teams missed two of their first three penalties, but Silva, on loan from Wolves, stepped up to win the competition for PSV after Mexico defender Edson Alvarez’s miss for Ajax.
