Church of Brethren Criticizes President Buhari’s Government

The Church of Brethren in Nigeria, also known as Ekklesiyar Yan’Uwa A Nigeria (EYN), has criticized the current Nigerian government led by President Muhammadu Buhari. The church aired its views on Wednesday during the 76th General Council, which is an annual meeting of leaders of the church held in Kwarhi, Adamawa State headquarters. EYN President, Reverend Joel Billi, stated that insecurity and economic challenges under President Buhari have become Nigeria’s biggest problems.

Billi accused the Federal Government of poor economic decisions and programs that have thrown the country into a massive economic crisis. He criticized the government’s failed currency redesign, continuous power outages from the national grid, and high inflation rates. These factors have resulted in a rise in the cost of living for every Nigerian, and the government’s trillions of naira spent on fuel subsidies have not significantly reduced the price of petroleum products.

Speaking on insecurity, Billi expressed disappointment that the President, as a former military head of state, has not done more to tackle armed banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and insurgency in different parts of the country. He stated that the President had made a pledge to end insecurity within three months of his administration but has not kept to his promise even after eight years.

Billi acknowledged that some level of normalcy had been restored in some areas, but insecurity remained a significant challenge that required urgent attention. He further wished that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President-elect, would do things differently and prayed for God’s wisdom and political will for him to steer the country in the right direction.

The Church’s criticism highlights the need for the government to take decisive action to address the economic and security challenges that have plagued the country for years. With Tinubu set to take office next year, Nigerians hope for an administration that prioritizes the needs of citizens and addresses the country’s challenges head-on.
