In a recent development, a 28-year-old businessman, Abubakar Usman, was sentenced to six months imprisonment for committing a fraudulent act against a tomato seller. The judgement was delivered by Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos at a Magistrates Court in Jos after the accused pleaded guilty to two counts of breach of trust and cheating.
The Magistrate acknowledged that the verdict would serve as a deterrent to others who may consider involving in similar acts, and gave the convict an option to pay a ₦10,000 fine. Additionally, he ordered Abubakar to compensate the nominal complainant by paying ₦50,000.
According to the prosecution counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, the case was reported on May 4th at the Laranto Police Station by the complainant, Ms Anagor Ugo. The tomato seller gave the defendant ₦50,000, requesting for 20 baskets of tomatoes. However, Abubakar converted the money to his personal use, which constitutes a punishable offence under the Plateau Penal Code law.
This verdict reinforces the need for buyers and sellers to uphold ethical practices in business transactions. It also urges law enforcement agencies to ensure a more significant enforcement of laws against those who engage in fraudulent acts that undermine the efforts of genuine businessmen and traders.
