New Plateau State Governor-Elect Promises to Tackle Insecurity and Killings

Following his victory in the March 18, 2023 governorship election, Plateau State Governor-Elect, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, has promised to prioritize tackling insecurity, spate of killings, and other challenges facing the state. In an interview monitored by our correspondent, Mutfwang expressed his readiness to tackle this daunting task ahead of the handover ceremony scheduled for May 29.

Speaking specifically about the recent killings in his local government, Mutfwang expressed empathy, stating that the people who were killed were his people. He promised to show strong leadership by taking decisive actions and making tough decisions geared towards resolving insecurity in the state.

Mutfwang acknowledged the enormity of the task at hand and noted that his administration would work towards coming up with home grown solutions to confront the security challenges rather than relying on a magic wand. He expressed an unwavering commitment to demonstrating strong political will, taking tough decisions and giving a new leadership style to the state to move the state forward.

In response to questions on the possible reasons for the killings, he ruled out reprisals or clashes and emphasised that the issue be addressed from a criminal justice perspective. He promised to uphold the rule of law and deal with crime impartially, regardless of the perpetrator’s affiliations.

When asked if his administration will probe the books of his predecessor, he noted that the administration would examine the previous government’s activities and initiate regular accountability checks. He promised to call corrupt officials to account in line with due process.

Mutfwang, who emerged victorious under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, beat the incumbent government’s party to become the governor-elect. With his empathetic and people-oriented approach, he offered hope to the people of Plateau State that he would work towards the development and progress of the state during his tenure.
