Queer activism faces major challenge of violence in Nigeria, says LGBT activist Kayode Ani

According to LGBT activist and Nigerian writer, Kayode Ani, the major challenge of queer activism in Nigeria is the threat of violence. Not only do LGBT people lack support from family and society, but they also face the danger of violence for expressing their sexuality.

Ani elaborated on this issue while appearing on the “Spit or Swallow” podcast, hosted by Hausa Chocolate. He explained that the problem of violence against LGBT individuals in Nigeria is not just from the laws or society, but from the perception of masculinity. Many heterosexual men see forcing other men to be heterosexual as part of their masculinity, and they attack any man who is not heterosexual. This also includes queer men, making advocacy for the queer community in Nigeria extremely difficult and dangerous.

Ani stated, “Part of the reasons why [queer] advocacy is so hard in Nigeria is because it’s very dangerous. Apart from the backlash from society, the lack of support from family, there is also like that threat of violence.”

This situation highlights the need for a shift in societal perception of masculinity in Nigeria, as well as the necessary support of family and society for LGBT individuals. Without a safe environment, LGBT individuals will continue to face challenges in expressing their true identity and living a fulfilling life.
