Melbourne Victory, an Australian football club, has announced the departure of former Manchester United and Portugal winger, Nani, after just 10 league appearances. This news follows the 36-year-old’s failure to impress on the field after being hailed as one of the A-Leagueā€™s biggest coups in years.
Despite signing last year from Italian club Venezia, Nani did not live up to the hype, failing to score before a serious knee injury ruled him out for the rest of the season. While the club acknowledges his contribution, they did not think it justified keeping him on the team.
“The club would like to thank Nani for his contribution and wishes him the best for the future,” Victory said in a statement.
After leaving Manchester United in 2015, Nani played for numerous other clubs, including ones in the United States, Spain, and Turkey. He was capped 112 times for Portugal and won the Premier League four times with United.
Unfortunately, Melbourne Victory had a disappointing season, finishing 11th in the 12-team table, making Nani’s less-than-stellar performance stand out more.
Reuters reports that six head coaches have taken the helm since 2018, which may have contributed to the club’s underwhelming results.
All in all, despite the high expectations placed on the former Man Utd star, Nani’s time at Melbourne Victory did not go as planned.
