Davido: The Influence of Pioneering Artists on his Music Career

In a recent interview with Omega, Nigerian Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, commonly known as Davido, revealed how the successes of his colleagues in the music industry such as D’banj, P-Square and Wizkid inspired him to pursue music.

The Atlanta-born artist admitted that he already knew some of the iconic names in the industry such as Wizkid, Wande Coal and D’banj before relocating to Nigeria. He disclosed, “I remember being in the club, the biggest artists then were P-Square, D’banj… Then Wizkid was really young but he was coming up in the game.”

Davido reminisced the moment he was inspired to delve into Nigerian music, saying “And I remember that moment, I was like, I want to do Nigerian music. I want to go on it early. I could already tell that it was going to be big.”

He may have had a head start due to his wealthy background but Davido asserts that he started off as a star, and many A-list artists already knew him before he made his breakthrough.

Davido’s music career boasts multiple accolades and record-breaking achievements, including being the first Nigerian artist to reach 1 million, 2 million, and 5 million followers on Instagram.

It is evident that the influence of the likes of D’banj, P-Square and Wizkid has had a profound impact on the Nigerian music industry, paving the way for newer artists like Davido to thrive and make a name for themselves.
