“Japa” Syndrome: Peter Obi Believes it will Benefit Nigeria

Former Anambra State governor, Mr Peter Obi, has expressed his agreement with Bill Gates regarding the “japa” syndrome in Nigeria. In a recent tweet, Obi concurred with Gates’s opinion that the growing trend of Nigerian professionals leaving the country for better opportunities abroad could ultimately be beneficial for Nigeria.

Obi has long believed that “our brain drain today will be our brain gain tomorrow.” While it may appear as a loss at present, Obi believes that the knowledge and resources gained by Nigerians abroad will be invaluable in the process of rebuilding the nation.

Highlighting the success stories of other developing countries such as China, India, and Ireland, Obi emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s commitment to good governance and the implementation of the right policies in order to reap the benefits of the diaspora. He cited India as an example, where the country’s investment in education and harnessing the knowledge of Indians in the diaspora has led to their significant contributions to the tech industry.

Obi expressed optimism that Nigeria too could achieve growth and development across all sectors by prioritizing investment in education, healthcare, and supporting small businesses. He stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law, ensuring security, and promoting national unity. According to Obi, when these conditions are fulfilled, diasporan Nigerians will return with their global training, skills, and resources to contribute immensely to building a new and better Nigeria.

Obi concluded by reaffirming his unwavering belief in the vision of a new Nigeria. He remains hopeful that the country will not give up on its dreams for a bright future.
